Collon & Kuusisto

Sun, Feb 16, 2025, 20:00
Nicholas Collon (Conductor), Pekka Kuusisto (Violin), Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
»The work of a crazy man.« »A thing made by idiots.« Wild comments for Stravinsky after his ‘Rite of Spring’ premiered in Paris in 1913. People jeered and hissed in the stalls; nothing more could be heard of the music. Respectable listeners clobbered each other. The police reported that 27 people were injured at the »massacre« (Debussy) and Jean Cocteau, who was in attendance, noted that »a countess’s diadem was askew«. What was once a shocker transformed into a classic of modernism. What better recommendation could there be?

Aurora Orchestra / Abel Selaocoe / Nicholas Collon

Sat, Mar 1, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Aurora Orchestra, Abel Selaocoe (Cello), Abel Selaocoe (Voice), Bernhard Schimpelsberger (Percussion), Nicholas Collon (Conductor)
The South African cellist and composer Abel Selaocoe has an irrepressible energy and stage presence that has propelled him from a township near Johannesburg to the top of the music world. Together with London’s Aurora Orchestra, whose Elbphilharmonie debut was hailed by the press as a »boldly creative orchestra« with »extravagantly sparkling interpretation«, an explosive evening is guaranteed. Selaocoe transcends genre boundaries with ease in his Cello Concerto. He combines Western music from classical to soul with the sounds and traditions of his homeland – including intense, throaty singing, which plays just as big a role in the concerto as the cello does. In the second half of the concert, the Aurora Orchestra presents its trademark: a major symphonic work, played entirely from memory without sheet music. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, which the composer himself described as a »sheer expression of joy, happiness and the affirmation of life«, should be a perfect fit for the enthusiastic young orchestra.

Aurora Orchestra und Abel Selaocoe

Mon, Mar 3, 2025, 20:00
Konzerthaus Berlin, Großer Saal (Berlin)
Aurora Orchestra, Nicholas Collon (Conductor), Abel Selaocoe (Cello), Bernhard Schimpelsberger (Percussion)
After the great success that the South African cellist, singer and composer Abel Selaocoe had at Konzerthaus last spring with the Bantu Ensemble and „Ancestral Memories“, we are delighted to welcome back this crossover artist between the musical cultures of European classical music and South Africa. Virtuoso on his instrument and with an expressive voice, with which Abel also masters an overtone singing style called Umngqokolo, he creates intense music full of suggestive and expressive power. This time he performs together with the experimental Aurora Orchestra, which plays by heart and whose programme includes Beethoven's Seventh alongside Abel's work „Four Spirits“.

WDR Happy Hour - Rachmaninow

Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 19:00
WDR Sinfonieorchester (Orchestra), Nicholas Collon (Conductor), Marlis Schaum (Moderator)
In 1995, 24-year-old Thomas Adès premiered his opera 'Powder her Face,' satirizing the extravagant life of an upper-class lady. His music blends avant-garde and ironic quotes. Rachmaninoff's 'Symphonic Dances,' a farewell piece, is a symphony reflecting moments of his rich life as a composer and virtuoso.
